How to Do Keyword Research Without Any Paid Tools (2026)
You do not need Ahrefs or SEMrush to build a ranking site. The free data is enough if you use it in the right order. This is the $0 keyword workflow, end to end.
Step 1: find money keywords free
Start from the commercial pages that already rank. Find the top 3 results for a broad term, then read their H2/H3 structure — each subheading is a keyword cluster someone has already validated. The free signal is not the volume, it is the structure: if a top result has 8 sub-sections, those 8 are your cluster.
Step 2: cluster, do not list
Group every keyword you found under one pillar. A pillar is the money term ("best X for Y"); the clusters are the long-tails that feed it ("X vs Y," "how to use X," "X alternatives"). One pillar + 5-8 clusters is a content unit. Build in units, not in a flat list.
Step 3: validate demand at $0
- Google autocomplete + "People also ask" — the free proof that real humans type these queries.
- YouTube search suggestions — the video-intent version of the same demand.
- The top results traffic estimate — use a free bar graph or the GSC data of a site you control; if the top page is not getting clicks, the cluster is not worth building.
Step 4: the cut
Only build clusters that pass demand validation. Most keyword lists you pull will be 40% long-tail with no real search volume — cutting those is where the $0 workflow saves you 30 pages of wasted work.
