Internal Linking Done Right: The On-Page SEO That Actually Moves Rankings in 2026

Updated October 2026

Internal linking is the cheapest ranking lever available — it is already on your site, it costs nothing, and it does most of the work that backlinks are supposed to do. Here is how to structure it so it actually moves rankings instead of just existing.

The rules that matter in 2026

  1. Link to the money page from every relevant cluster — the pillar ("best X") should have 5-8 internal links pointing at it, one from each cluster article. This is the authority pass.
  2. Anchor text is the topic, not "click here" — the anchor should be the keyword or a close variant ("AI chatbot retainers," not "this guide"). The anchor is the signal.
  3. Link mid-article, not only in a footer list — a relevant in-context link in the body out-ranks a "related articles" box at the bottom. The box is fine, but it is not the move.
  4. Two links per page, to your two closest articles — not ten. The two most topically-related targets get the authority; the rest is noise.

The structure per money page

On any commercial page: one answer-first block at the top, the verdict table in the middle, and two in-context internal links (to your two most relevant other articles) plus the FAQ schema at the bottom. That is the whole on-page linking job. It is not a lot — and it is the difference between a site that passes authority and one that does not.

This is the on-page companion to our writing-that-passes-search guide — that one builds the signal, this one routes it.
