Freelance Platforms, Ranked by What You Actually Keep: Net Earnings Modeled
The single biggest driver of freelance income is not your rate — it is the platform fee drag. Two freelancers at the same $100/hr can differ by $600-$900/month purely on which platform they bill through. We modeled the net outcomes across the major platforms.
Modeled net earnings (100 billable hours/month)
| Fee structure | Net @ $50/hr | Net @ $100/hr |
|---|---|---|
| 10% commission + $5 fixed | $4,950 | $9,950 |
| 5% flat | $4,750 | $9,500 |
| $29/mo subscription (100% kept) | $4,971 | $9,971 |
| 20% | $4,000 | $8,000 |
| 25% | $3,750 | $7,500 |

What the numbers mean
- High-fee marketplaces (20%+) only make sense if they feed you more volume than you can fill yourself. Below ~200 hours/month, the fee is eating your margin.
- Subscription-only platforms flip the economics: you pay for access, keep 100% of the bill. Best once you have a client pipeline.
- The "best platform" is not fixed — it is a function of your hours/month and whether you are constrained on client acquisition.
