Recurring vs. One-Time Affiliate Commissions: Which Actually Builds Income

Updated October 2026

A one-time commission pays you once; a recurring commission pays you every month the customer stays. For a solo affiliate site, that difference is the whole game โ€” here is the math that shows why recurring is the only model that builds real income.

The two models, priced out

ModelPayout shapeIncome at 100 active customers
One-time (3-8% e-commerce)One payment per sale$300-$800 total, gone
One-time high-ticket (20-40% a course)One larger payment$2,000-$4,000 total, gone
Recurring SaaS (20-40% of MRR)Every month the customer stays$500-$2,000/month, ongoing

Why recurring compounds

A one-time commission requires you to keep finding new customers forever, at a flat rate. A recurring commission means every customer you ever convert keeps paying, so the same traffic that earned $500 in month 3 keeps earning it in month 12 and beyond, while you add new customers on top. The sites income is the sum of all past conversions still active, not just this months. That is the compound, and it is the only shape where the asset (the site) grows in value without your ongoing effort.

The catch

Recurring commissions are slower to start โ€” the SaaS customer has to stay for the payout to recur โ€” and the cookie window matters. A 60-day recurring cookie means you get credited for conversions that happen within 60 days of the click. The model that wins for a solo site in 2026 is recurring SaaS with a 30-60 day cookie and a 20%+ rate: slower first payout, but the only one that builds a number that grows while you sleep.
